lyrics

Against the chill she wore a coat
As ocean spray blew across the boat
To Edisto Amelia came
To island rich in wealth and fame
Betrothed unto a Charleston man
She came to share the wedding plan
But she fell in love with a planter there
Amelia: fickle, vain, and fair

From Brick House prim Amelia wrote
Her fiancé a parting note
But he appeared demanding why
Their wedding plans should ever die
Amelia loved the planter now
They had made an engagement vow
Scorned and hurt the suitor said
“I would rather see you dead!”

(chorus)
Once Amelia walked upon
The island beaches where
She rode the swelling tide
Of love so free
Brick House trimmed in black
Now grieves the loss of one so fair
As ebbing tide returns
Unto the sea

The wedding day dawned bright and blue
Amelia’s face a rosy hue
Brick House filled with guests and food
And smiling groom in festive mood
The mistress and her faithful Maum
Retired to an upper room
She wrapped herself in wedding gown
Brought across the bay from town

Maum Tamer went just down the hall
Amelia heard a whispered call
The window sash was open wide
The moon was full and white outside
Two shots tore through that tragic night
The groom ran up the stairs in fright
Bloody handprint on the wall
Amelia lay upon the floor

(chorus)

Brick House burned in ‘28
No one alive saw Amelia’s fate
Her charm once graced this ocean isle
If only for a little while
Some say on a moonlit night
When Brick House ruins shine alight
In wedding gown Amelia stands
In window looking o’er the sands

(chorus)
